About the museum

The museum's origins go back to 1927, when the teacher and amateur archaeologist Ernst Wurth senior first displayed archaeological finds in the Guntramsdorf elementary school. The rapidly growing collection had to be moved out during the Second World War and was largely lost.

After the war, his son Ernst Wurth junior continued the work and expanded the holdings with local history objects from the more recent past, which were again shown in the elementary school. In 1974 the local history museum was finally able to open in the old Hauptschule. Between 1999 and 2003 the municipality had the building completely renovated and the collection rearranged.

Today the museum tells more than 5,000 years of local history: from Celtic excavation finds and a Lombard burial ground through viticulture, agriculture, brickworks and industry to crafts and everyday life. Among the reconstructions are a Greißlerei grocery shop, a doctor's surgery and a kitchen from 1905; in addition there are the marionettes of the Guntramsdorf puppeteer Fritz Kunstmann. The museum is run by the Ernst Wurth-Museumsverein.
