About the museum

The roller engraving works in Guntramsdorf was set up in 1911 by the engraver Johann Endler, who had immigrated from Warnsdorf in northern Bohemia. As the only business of its kind in Austria, it supplied printing and embossing rollers for the textile, paper, metal foil, plastics and glass industries; in good times 20 to 25 people worked in the building. With the rise of photogravure and large-scale patterns in the 1950s, the business in fabric printing rollers collapsed; in the end the engraver Kurt Teschitel kept the business going alone until it was closed in 1986.

Instead of using the building for another purpose, after talks with experts it was decided to preserve the intact ensemble: it was placed under monument protection and opened as a museum in 1989. It is run by a society for the promotion and research of Lower Austrian industrial culture in the Viertel unter dem Wienerwald.

The machinery has hardly changed since the founding; most of the machines are over a hundred years old. Especially impressive is the transmission system, unique in Central Europe and still functioning, which drives the machines with leather belts from an overhead shaft. In addition there are thousands of hand-engraved mills (Moletten), trial prints and preserved order books, which form an archive of pattern development in the 20th century.
