About the museum

Count Paul Nádasdy had the castle built in 1625 in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The two-storey, four-winged complex around an arcaded courtyard with four low corner towers combines manor house, fortified castle and farmyard, as was common in the border region with Hungary; it was once surrounded by a moat. Since 1971 the castle has been protected as cultural property under the Hague Convention.

In 1966 the painter Anton Lehmden, a representative of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, acquired the badly dilapidated building. Until his death in 2018 he restored it step by step: partition walls were removed, the Knights' Hall and chapel renewed – the chapel was rededicated in 1981 with stained-glass windows by Lehmden –, stucco rooms from the 17th century uncovered and arcades with sgraffito balusters restored.

Over more than 800 m², the Lehmden Museum shows an overview of the artist's work in the rooms he designed. Since 2012, stained-glass windows, Stations of the Cross paintings and two large murals that Lehmden had created for a chapel in Graz have also been on loan at the castle. The building can only be visited on guided tours by registration, led by the artist's daughter.
