About the museum
The composer Carl Goldmark (1830–1915), later famous above all for his opera “The Queen of Sheba”, grew up as the son of a Jewish cantor in Deutschkreutz, one of the former Seven Communities in what was then Hungarian Burgenland. According to the municipality, he spent the years 1834 to 1844 in the house on Hauptstraße, and by his own account received the decisive impulses for his later work here.
In 1980 the municipality of Deutschkreutz bought the building and set up the Goldmark Museum in it. The house is dedicated to the life and work of the composer. With display panels, pictures and manuscripts it traces his development from child to musician.
Access is special: visitors open the door at the side entrance with a chip card, for example a bank card (Bankomat) or e-card, and tour the exhibition on their own; the light switches on via a motion sensor. Personal guided tours are possible on request, and for the 100th anniversary of his death in 2015 there was a special anniversary programme.
