About the museum
The Bierarium is the private museum of Kurt Balazs of Oberwart, who collected even as a teenager and laid the foundation with beer mats from a school-leaving trip to Mallorca. He was one of the founders of the first Austrian beer can collectors' club and traded for years with collectors all over the world. The name "Bierarium" was coined on the model of aquarium or planetarium; the museum expressly sees itself as a brewery souvenir museum and not as a beer museum.
On display is everything that breweries produce to advertise their beer. According to the state of Burgenland, seven rooms in the cellar of the house at Keplergasse 14 hold more than 10,000 beer cans from over 170 countries, more than 5,000 bottle openers – one of the largest collections of its kind – and over 1,000 tankards and glasses. In addition there are beer mats, enamel signs, lamps, lighters and much more; numerous breweries in Austria and abroad have donated pieces.
The museum attracted a lot of media coverage and took part in the Lange Nacht der Museen from 2010. In 2003 it received the title "Bierinitiative des Jahres" (beer initiative of the year), and in 2014 the radio station Ö3 named it the second most bizarre museum in Austria. Visits are free of charge, but only possible after registering by telephone.
