About the museum

The Lokpark is run by the Österreichische Gesellschaft für Eisenbahngeschichte (ÖGEG, Austrian Society for Railway History), founded in Linz in 1974 to preserve steam locomotives. In 1976 the association acquired its first locomotive, the 78.618, which volunteers restored over roughly ten years. In 1992 an East German express steam locomotive of class 01.5 was added.

In 1996 the ÖGEG took over the standard-gauge coal railway from Timelkam to Ampflwang, including the engine house, from the closed Hausruck coal mine of the Wolfsegg-Traunthaler Kohlenwerks AG. On the former mining site, the museum uses the former miners' bathhouse as its entrance and the former central coal-sorting plant as its exhibition building.

With the 2006 exhibition "Kohle & Dampf" the site was expanded. Around a 26-meter turntable, originally in Rosenheim, a new roundhouse with 21 stalls was built. Today the Lokpark covers about 25,000 square meters and displays more than a hundred steam, diesel and electric locomotives, wagons, cranes and track-construction vehicles. The sorting building tells the story of railways and coal mining across five levels and houses model railway layouts. On selected days the museum train runs between Timelkam and Ampflwang.
