About the museum
The name “Frankomarchia” recalls the Frankish settlement of the Hausruck-Attergau region under the patronage of the Diocese of Bamberg. In the “Marktsaal” (market hall), the market museum shows historical milestones of Frankenmarkt as a centre of trade and crafts.
The tour includes a “Ratsstube” (council chamber) furnished in Renaissance style, which points to the old administration and jurisdiction, as well as two rooms with decorative and everyday objects showing middle-class living culture and fine craftsmanship. The “Schulmeisterkasten” (schoolmaster’s cabinet) holds books and school history from the late 18th to the end of the 19th century. A late Biedermeier middle-class room and examples of festive clothing from the same period round off the display.
The museum is housed in Schloss Stauff, which goes back to a mill and a hammer works of the 13th century. In 1578 the “Huntsrainermühle” was raised to the status of a Freisitz (noble residence), and at the beginning of the 17th century the Counts Khevenhüller converted it into a hunting lodge. In 1991 the beverage manufacturer August Starzinger acquired the castle and had it extensively renovated between 2001 and 2007; today it also serves as a wedding and event venue.
