About the museum

The local history museum, affectionately called the “Heimathaus” in Obernberg for decades, is housed in the medieval Gurtentor. It is the heart of the work of the Obernberg am Inn local history and cultural association, which looks after and redesigns the collections and also organises events throughout the year.

The collection shows how occupations have changed over time and documents trades that, for the most part, no longer exist today. On view are rural furnishings, Innviertel brawling tools, festive costumes, objects relating to pharmacy and medicine, historic weapons and rare crafts. Important focal points are rafting and shipping on the Inn, which once brought prosperity to the market town of Obernberg, as well as fishing on the Inn.

The museum also owns high-quality blacksmith work and examples of sacred art and popular piety, including a rarely preserved processional image showing Mary as an expectant mother, which used to be carried from house to house. Since June 2016, a cultural walking tour through the medieval town has complemented the museum.
