About the museum
The Römermuseum Altheim is housed in the so-called Ochzethaus, a log-built farmhouse from the mid-19th century with painted fretwork decoration; an inscription refers to the year 1865. The name derives from the house name of the last owner. The house is in the St. Laurenz district of the municipality of Altheim, and a contemporary extension adjoins the old building.
The permanent exhibition was set up in 1993 as a satellite venue of the Upper Austrian State Exhibition and was re-presented in 2018 under its present name. Under the motto "Innviertel – the Granary of the Roman Empire in Upper Austria" it shows finds from the excavations at Weirading, Simetsberg and Wagham and offers insight into arable farming, livestock breeding and everyday life on a Roman villa rustica, as well as the life and environment of the Romans on the lower Inn.
The owner is the town of Altheim, and the museum is run by the association Zeitspuren Altheim. Families and school classes are especially welcome: children and adults can dress up in Roman clothing, there is a play area on the top floor, and an escape game leads through the exhibition. About three kilometres to the east lies the Weirading open-air museum with the reconstruction of a Roman bath.
