About the museum

The remains of a Roman villa rustica, a large farm estate from the province of Noricum, were excavated at Weirading in the municipality of Altheim in the Innviertel. The open-air museum shows the reconstruction of the bathhouse with its foundations and heating system; at almost 300 square meters, the bath was an impressive building. A cutaway shows how the Roman underfloor heating (hypocaust) worked.

Particularly remarkable is a covered corridor of about 50 meters that connected the bath with the main building of the villa; according to the tourism portal, this find is so far unique in the Roman province of Noricum. Information panels with research results up to 2018, a clay pillar, audio recordings that can be played back, and a stereoscope with an idealized reconstruction of the villa tell of life among the Romans.

The site lies about three kilometers east of the Römermuseum Altheim, which displays the finds from the excavations at Weirading, and is accessible at any time with free admission. Signposts lead from Altheim to the Roman bath.
