About the museum
Asbach Monastery near Rotthalmünster was founded in 1091 as a Benedictine abbey; Christina, widow of Count Gerold of Frauenstein and Ering, is considered its founder. Rebuilt after the Thirty Years' War, the complex took on its Baroque form in the 18th century; in 1803 the monastery was secularized. The monastery church contains works by important artists from the transition between Rococo and Classicism.
From 1976 the Kulturkreis Kloster Asbach e. V. campaigned for the restoration of the buildings. In 1983 the Bavarian National Museum took over the cloister and parts of the monastery complex, and in 1984 the branch museum opened. It is run by the Cultural Office of the Passau district.
The collection includes casts of medieval sculptures from Old Bavaria, wrought iron from the 15th to 19th centuries, Lower Bavarian furniture and large parts of the folk culture collection of Rudolf Kriss, with objects of popular piety from the 17th to 20th centuries.
