About the museum

The Heimatkundliches Museum of St. Gilgen is housed in the former barn (Stadl) of the Wetzlgut, documented in 1652; the Seitenflurhaus (Wetzl or Einsiedler house) has an upper floor of log construction with balconies, and its beams are dated 1655, 1668 and 1770. The cottage industry of bobbin lace making, which developed in St. Gilgen after the Thirty Years' War, is a thematic focus. The building is a listed monument.

Since 1980 the house has been used as a local history museum. It displayed objects on local crafts such as woodturning, bobbin lace making and glassblowing, a religious collection with nativity figures, as well as furniture and household goods of the 19th century. Further topics are famous guests of the tourist resort, including the Nobel Prize winner Karl von Frisch, who had his summer residence in St. Gilgen and researched the language of bees, as well as the animals of the area.

The museum received the recognition award of the Austrian Museum Prize in 1994, the Salzburger Museumsschlüssel, awarded for the first time, in 2001, and the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality in 2003. It is currently being enlarged and rebuilt with an extension; following a design competition in 2021, it is meant to focus more on local crafts and fine crafts in the future.
