About the museum
The Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn (SKGLB) was a 67-kilometre narrow-gauge railway that connected Salzburg with Bad Ischl from 1894. At St. Lorenz a short branch line diverged to Mondsee. Operations ceased in 1957, vehicles were sold or scrapped and many railway buildings were demolished or converted. The engine shed in Mondsee from 1890/91, by contrast, survived unchanged.
Railway enthusiasts of the "Club 760" tracked down the railway's remaining vehicles and gave the impetus for a museum. In 1979 the Heimatbund Mondseeland decided to establish it, and in 1996 the museum opened to the public. From 1988 to 1996 the engine shed was prepared for this purpose with a great deal of voluntary work.
The engine shed houses the operational steam locomotives 4, 5 and 9; the carriage shed displays passenger coaches and the imperial salon carriage of 1906, the only narrow-gauge salon carriage in Austria. There are also a ticket office, photos, plans, timetables and signalling equipment. By 2019 the exhibition was redesigned and expanded to include themes such as tourism, transport and shipping. Also new are the Malzer family's model railway collection and a layout by Wilhelm Frühwald with light and sound effects. Historic boats from Lake Mondsee are displayed in the outdoor grounds.
