About the museum

The Mozarthaus in St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang is the village’s former district court. Wolfgang Nikolaus Pertl, grandfather of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was the district judge here from 1716 and had the building remodelled around 1720. On 25 December 1720 his daughter Anna Maria Pertl, later Mozart’s mother, was born in this house.

Mozart’s sister Maria Anna, known as Nannerl, married the St. Gilgen district judge Johann Baptist von Berchtold zu Sonnenburg in 1784 and lived for 17 years in her mother’s birthplace, where she raised her children and stepchildren. Wolfgang Amadeus himself never visited St. Gilgen.

Until 2002 the house served as a district court. The cultural association Mozartdorf St. Gilgen, founded in 2001, bought it in 2005 and converted it in 2008/09 into a cultural and event centre. On the ground floor, a small memorial, set up as a provisional arrangement, commemorates Anna Maria and Maria Anna Mozart, with a reading corner, a multilingual film and audio texts via QR code. The upper rooms are used for concerts, exhibitions, seminars and weddings.
