About the museum
The cave lies in the 476-metre-high Buchberg south of Alland in the Vienna Woods and is protected as a natural monument. A pioneer battalion from Klosterneuburg made it accessible, and it opened as a show cave in 1928. Since then, renowned researchers have also worked here.
At around 70 metres long, 12 metres deep and with passages up to 12 metres high, it is small, but it has the richest dripstone decoration of all the caves in the Vienna Woods, including water chimneys, solution niches, cave pearls, moonmilk and stalactites. Plant roots reach as far as eleven metres into the cave through rock joints, and cave crickets, spiders and harvestmen live in it.
The most important find is the skeleton of a brown bear more than 10,000 years old. Excavations on the Buchberg also brought to light objects made of antler, bone, stone and clay, as well as a few of bronze and iron, which show that people lived here in prehistoric and early historic times. The market town of Alland manages the cave, which has been fitted with a modern lighting system and multimedia elements and may only be entered on guided tours.
