About the museum
The Schönbeck-Mühle in Maria Anzbach dates from the late Gothic period and is one of the area’s technical monuments. The building, with its barrel vaults and groin vaults, remained in operation as a mill until the 1940s; the last miller was Josef Schönbeck. The mill produced not only electricity for its own needs but later also supplied neighbouring houses and farms on the Raßberg. It is therefore regarded as the place where the first electric light burned in the surrounding area.
After it was shut down, the building fell into disrepair for around fifty years. A group of dedicated volunteers from the village eventually renovated it, preserving the historic milling technology in the process. Today the mill is a meeting place in the village: the municipality runs the inn “Anzbacher Mühle” in the building, and events take place in the courtyard.
A local history museum is integrated into the rooms, presenting the history of the village and the region. The Dorferneuerung Maria Anzbach (village renewal association) is working with a team of volunteers to develop the mill museum further. Visits are possible year-round by appointment; during the Long Night of Museums the house occasionally opens in the evening.
