Egon-Schiele-Zelle und MUSEUM Region Neulengbach

About the museum

The courthouse on Neulengbach’s Hauptplatz is a Renaissance building with 19th-century extensions. In a cellar cell the painter Egon Schiele was held for 21 days in 1912, after he had been charged in the so-called Neulengbach affair. In Cell No. 2 he produced 13 prison drawings at that time. The cell was rediscovered in 1963 by the art historian Alessandra Comini, because Schiele’s drawings of the cell door matched it exactly.

Today the original site is open to the public with a small permanent exhibition in the cell block. The MUSEUM Region Neulengbach is also housed in the same building. It goes back to a district museum founded in 1921, most of whose holdings were looted in 1945, and from 1961 it was housed as a local history museum in the old courthouse. Owing to lack of space it was closed in the mid-1980s. When the town was elevated to city status in 2000, the surviving holdings came to the district court; since then, changing exhibitions have been organised there continuously under the name MUSEUM Region Neulengbach. The museum does not have a permanent exhibition.
