About the museum
Potočka zijalka is a karst cave on the slope of Olševa at an altitude of about 1,700 metres and the first discovered Slovenian Palaeolithic site. Excavations by Professor Srečko Brodar in 1928–1935 laid the foundations of Slovenian Palaeolithic archaeology. The finds from the excavations are held by the Pokrajinski muzej Celje (Regional Museum Celje).
The permanent exhibition has been set up since 1996 in the cellar rooms of the Firšt inn in Logarska dolina. On 18 display panels it shows human development, the stone and bone tools of the kromanjonci (Cro-Magnon people), the flora and fauna of the Ice Age, and documentation of Brodar's excavations. The exhibits include a cave bear skull, stone tools, bone spears and a copy of a prašivanka, one of the oldest known sewing needles. The exhibition was prepared by experts from the Paleontološki inštitut Ivana Rakovca (Ivan Rakovec Palaeontological Institute) at SAZU and falls under the Pokrajinski muzej Celje.
Alongside the exhibition, the Firšt catering and tourism business also offers guided tours of the Fidov gaj ethnological park, with the permanent exhibition Zdravje bolnikov (Health of the Sick).
