About the museum
On the night of 8 to 9 May 1945, the Soviet General Dmitri Drichkin and the US General Stanley Reinhart met in Erlauf and celebrated the armistice together. In 1965, the Jewish emigrants Ernst Brod and Frank Schanzer brought the memory of it back to the town; a memorial plaque on the municipal building became the starting point of a culture of remembrance that is still cultivated today, with annual commemorations and later peace days.
In 1995 the peace monuments by Jenny Holzer and Oleg Komov were created, followed by several temporary art projects in public space, for example in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. Exhibitions in a small peace memorial and documentary films were devoted to the historical aspects.
On 9 May 2015 the museum ERLAUF ERINNERT was opened. Since then, a permanent exhibition of about 250 square metres has shown the events in the town and region, the history of totalitarianism and expulsion, and the ruptures and continuities of Austrian remembrance culture in the Second Republic, combined with artistic works. An archive of art and a film room give access to the art and film projects realised in Erlauf; a separate space is used for lectures, readings and educational projects.
