About the museum

The pilgrimage to Maria Taferl goes back to events surrounding an oak tree on the Taferlberg: in 1633 a shepherd is said to have injured himself there while felling wood and recovered miraculously, and in 1642 a judge from the neighbouring village brought a Pietà to the tree. After further reported apparitions, the Passau church authorities permitted the construction of a pilgrimage church around the oak.

The foundation stone was laid in 1660; because of wars, epidemics and a lack of funds, construction dragged on for over six decades. The master builders Georg Gerstenbrand, Carlo Lurago and Jakob Prandtauer were involved, and the frescoes were created in 1713–1718 from designs by Antonio Beduzzi. The church was consecrated in 1724. After several renovations, a comprehensive restoration of the interior, furnishings and organ was completed in 2010.

The treasury is a room with baroque decoration whose ceiling paintings show the origin story of the pilgrimage. On the walls hang votive paintings that tell of healings and rescues; also on display are vestments, liturgical objects and votive offerings that the faithful have donated over the centuries in thanks or as a petition. Each year a themed show supplements the collection.
