About the museum
The kunstGarten was founded in Graz in 2004 as a non-profit project. Its approach combines contemporary art with natural processes, gardens and science; exhibitions, performances, readings, concerts and film evenings take place in its own house, in the exhibition garden and in public space. The project is run by the artist couple Irmi and Reinfrid Horn.
The museum part includes the Hortopia archive with a garden library and video library, comprising around 4,700 book and 5,800 film titles and accessible as a reference and lending library, as well as the Horn Collection with sculptures, installations and paintings. In the garden of around 1,300 square metres, about 200 historic and modern roses grow under the title "Flora Performing", laid out according to wabi-sabi principles.
Since 2019 the "Street Gallery" has shown art on the fence and the neighbouring facade, freely accessible even outside opening hours. Among the well-known projects in the urban space is the garden labyrinth by Hartmut Skerbisch in the Dr.-Schlossar-Park, opened in 2007.
