About the museum
The impetus came in 2001, when the municipality of Pettneu bought a painting by Ernst Platz. The painter from Karlsruhe had worked in the village almost every autumn from 1908 to 1932 and called it his artistic home. Because the village had no wall where the picture could be shown, a process between the municipality, the parish and associations began, which ended with the conversion of a basement in the Widum.
A small gallery was created in the basement of the listed Widum, opposite the parish church, to designs by the architect Reinhardt Honold. The low ceiling height and difficult access were resolved by a design that leads the entrance as a passage through the front garden and connects the interior and garden areas. The Kunstraum opened in 2005.
It is run by the association KUNSTRAUM Pettneu under the motto "Culture is what we have together". Several changing exhibitions of contemporary art are shown each year, along with concerts, readings and film evenings. Admission is free.
