About the museum

According to dendrochronological analysis, the Huber-Hus in the centre of Lech was built around 1590 and is considered the oldest dated house with an originally six-cell floor plan on the Tannberg. It was probably built by the Fritz family, later documented as its owners; through the marriage of the house’s heiress Anna-Katharina Fritz to Josef Huber it passed in 1830 to the Huber family, after whom it is named in the village. The last residents were the unmarried brothers Emil, Otto and Hugo Huber – a farmer, a cooper and the caretaker of the Walkerbach power plant – and their housekeeper Maria Konzett-Pircher, who lived in the house until 2000.

The municipality of Lech bought the house in the early 1980s. As early as 1984 a first local-history display had been created with the Heimatpflege- und Museumsverein Lech-Tannberg, which is now housed as a display collection in the fire station. After restoration and renovation in 2004, the Huber-Hus opened as a museum in December 2005.

The focus is on the restored living and working rooms – parlour, side chamber, kitchen and cooper’s workshop – furnished largely with the household goods of the last residents. They convey the rural living and working world on the Tannberg as well as the history of the house, its residents and the museum. Changing exhibitions are devoted to the regional, skiing and tourism history of Lech.

The operator is the municipality of Lech am Arlberg; the museum is closely linked to the municipal archive and has been directed by Monika Gärtner since 2015.
