About the museum

For centuries the people of the Samnaun valley lived from farming; the steep meadow slopes still shape the valley today. The Talmuseum commemorates this era and the hard living conditions of the mountain farmers.

It is housed in the Chasa Retica in Samnaun-Plan, a farmhouse built in 1658 in Engadine style with influences from the Tyrolean Oberland. The house is one of the oldest in the valley and is under heritage protection. At the initiative of the municipality, it was extensively restored in 1984 together with the cantonal heritage conservation office; the museum opened in 1988.

The exhibits were gathered over long, painstaking work throughout the valley. The organized collection shows tools and objects of daily life and, in the living and working rooms, conveys how a Samnaun farming family lived between the 16th and 19th centuries. A further exhibition is devoted to the Benedictine monk and poet Maurus Carnot (1865–1939), who came from Samnaun.
