About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Holzgau is housed in an 18th-century farmhouse. The two-story double house is built in log construction on a masonry foundation and was divided between two households: the museum occupies house part No. 35, while part No. 34 is still lived in today. The façade is decorated with rich Lüftlmalerei (painted façade art), with illusionary architecture and images of saints, presumably by the workshop of the Zeiller family.
The low, narrow rooms show how people in the upper Lech Valley once lived and worked: a vaulted kitchen, the parlor with its Herrgottswinkel (corner shrine), tools and implements from house, farm and high pasture, as well as costumes and early sewing machines. The exhibition focuses on the objects themselves and deliberately leaves little staging. It touches on themes such as the division of farms among heirs, seasonal work and itinerant trade, alpine pasture farming, timber rafting, hunting and early tourism.
The house is visited on a guided tour by a local cultural guide, who offers it weekly in summer during the village and culture walk. A large key opens the door, part of the special charm that the State of Tyrol also highlighted in a museum profile.
