About the museum

Josef Georg Madersperger was born in Kufstein in 1768. As a young man he moved with his father to Vienna, where he worked as a tailor. He developed a sewing machine that imitated the movement of the sewing hand and applied for a patent for it in 1814. During his lifetime he found no buyer. He gave his first working device to the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna and died in poverty in 1850. The "Näh-Hand" (sewing hand) is today on display at the Technisches Museum Wien.

In his birthplace on Kinkstraße, the association Freunde J. Madersperger set up a small museum on the first floor in 2000. In 2003 it received a project award from the Tyrolean Museum Prize. Today it is promoted by the Kufsteinerland Tourism Association.

In the museum's only room, a multivision show of about 20 minutes tells the story of the inventor's life and work. There are also information panels and several historical sewing machines behind glass. The museum further explores how clothing changed from a luxury item into a mass product, and how the sewing machine developed technically.
