About the museum
The Fohlenhof Ebbs was established in 1947 at Schloss Wagrain, when the Tyrolean breeding association was reorganised after the Second World War. As a central stallion rearing farm, it was meant to ensure that around 25 young stallions from all seven bloodlines are raised properly each year. Bit by bit the association bought parts of the castle estate, in the 1950s the roughly 30-hectare Hengstalm, and expanded the facility: a young stallion loose-housing barn in the 1960s, the large riding hall and a breeding stallion barn at the beginning of the 1970s, and in 1993 the arena with 3,500 seats. Later, two riding halls, a driving area and new stables were added.
Today the farm is regarded as the oldest still active Haflinger stud in the world and as the centre of international Haflinger breeding. Around 100 horses, including about 50 broodmares, live here, along with the largest Haflinger breeding station in Austria. The owner is the Haflinger Pferdezuchtverband Tirol (Haflinger Horse Breeding Association of Tyrol), which is also headquartered here; since 1961 the big filly auction has taken place on the last Saturday in September.
Visitors can tour the stud every day, see the mare herds with their foals and the breeding stallions in summer, and watch the training. Attached to the stud is a Haflinger and carriage museum with carriages and sleighs more than a hundred years old, farm tools for use with horses, and studbooks.
