About the museum
The house with the wall paintings in Niederndorf has housed a village smithy since 1589. At Christmas 1918, Hugo Pichler bought the building from his former master and ran the smithy until 1968. He was also a passionate collector and held numerous trade licenses; over the decades an extensive collection grew up covering crafts, farming, village life and club life.
After his father's death in 1981, his youngest daughter Liselotte Kaltschmid decided, together with her husband, to turn the empty workshop into a museum. The pieces were sorted, derusted and restored, and in 1982 the Heimatmuseum "Zur alten Schmiede" opened. After extensions in the 2000s, the entrance area was comprehensively renovated by October 2021, including new windows, dried-out walls and barrier-free access.
At its heart is the smithy with its double forge and the "singing anvil"; there are also rooms on wheelwrighting, locksmithing, shoemaking, household, needlework, historic winter sports equipment and sacred objects. Mrs. Kaltschmid personally guides visitors through the house, telling the stories in the local dialect.
