About the museum
The antiquarium is housed in the former dairy (ex latteria) of Camporosso, a hamlet of Tarvisio, and was set up in 2012 to preserve and present the archaeological finds from the area. In Roman times Camporosso hosted the first customs station of Noricum on the road linking Aquileia with Virunum, on the watershed between the Adriatic and the Black Sea.
Excavations in 1982 uncovered part of a Mithraeum, a place of worship of the god Mithras, and led to the recovery of numerous finds. The route begins in the entrance hall with the funerary altar of Iulia Calliope and continues into the room devoted to the Mithraeum, where a selection of material illustrates the spread of the cult among officials, customs officers and soldiers.
Among the most significant pieces are the inscribed monument showing the birth of Mithras from the rock, the statuette of Cautopates, a bronze bust of Luna/Selene, inscriptions documenting the organisation of the customs post, and a group of coins dating from 270 to the end of the 4th century.
