About the museum
The Local History and Minorities Museum opened on 29 April 1983 in the Stájer-ház (Styrian House) in Szentgotthárd. The decision to establish it was taken in September 1982. The core of the collection is the ethnographic collection of Gáspár Károly, a retired school headmaster of Slovene origin, from which his widow offered 461 objects in 1982. In 1986, on the centenary of the researcher’s birth, the institution took the name of Pável Ágoston, a native of the region who was an ethnographer and literary historian.
The museum has developed since 2009: a display storage room (látványraktár) was created, a new wing was added in 2012, when barrier-free access and a museum education workshop room were also established. The upper-floor exhibition rooms were modernised in 2016. Since 2013 the museum has been maintained by the Municipality of Szentgotthárd.
The institution operates as a Slovene base museum (bázismúzeum). Its permanent exhibitions present the lifestyle of the Slovenes around Szentgotthárd, the pottery of South-West Transdanubia, the 1664 Battle of Szentgotthárd, the industrial history of the town and the material of the display storage room.
