About the museum

The Strasserhäusl in Laimach, a district of Hippach in the Zillertal, is a log house from 1714 and is a listed building. Smoke-blackened beams, bull's-eye window panes, wrought-iron door fittings and a parlor with a stove tell of the simple life of the Zillertal mountain farmers. The house was lived in until 1998; after conversion and renovation, Rosi Kraft opened it as a museum in 2000, furnished with her collection of rural antiques.

The house is famous for its former family: at the beginning of the 19th century the Strassers lived here. Father Lorenz traded in gloves and in the pre-Christmas season traveled with his children to markets abroad; the siblings attracted customers with Tyrolean songs. At the Leipzig Christmas market in 1831 they also sang "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht" and so carried the song to Germany. A songbook with "Vier ächten Tyroler Liedern" (Four Genuine Tyrolean Songs) finally recorded it.

After Rosi Kraft's death in April 2020, the building reverted to the municipality of Hippach. The caretaker appointed by the municipality, Johann Kainzner, refurbished several rooms with volunteers, where old woodwind instruments and tools can now be seen. An information room tells the story of the Strasser children, and a plaque commemorates Rosi Kraft. The museum has been open again since November 2021.
