About the museum
The Mitterstall at the entrance to Brandberg in the rear Zillertal valley was originally a fodder and stable building belonging to the Widum, the parish house. The timber was felled between 1710 and 1712 according to studies, and the date 1715 marked on the ridge beam probably indicates completion. In this region it was common to use several fodder barns in turn: in winter the animals moved from barn to barn as the feed ran out. The middle of the three barns gave the house its name.
After decades in which decay threatened, the listed log building was restored in 2009/2010 together with the village renewal program and the Federal Monuments Office, including a new roof of larch wood shingles. Since 2011 it has housed an exhibition of the Zillertal Alps Nature Park.
The exhibition “Kulturlandschafts.Welten” traces the transformation of the landscape around Brandberg: from settlement, through the difficult farming on the mountain, to today’s challenges for alpine pastures, mountain meadows, and forests. Texts and photos in the side rooms, large-format landscape images in the threshing floor, and audio stations in which locals talk about their work convey the content even without a guided tour.
