About the museum

The Frankenmarkt Baroque nativity scene goes back to a vow made by the townspeople: after the town survived the plague years of 1713/14, a nativity scene was presumably commissioned from the famous Mondsee sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler. After his death in 1723, his workshop successor Franz Anton Koch probably completed the lavish nativity scene.

It differs from usual Christmas nativity scenes: the birth of Christ is set in a rich royal residence city or a palatial temple, in keeping with the Baroque idea that the event had to be worthy of a ruler of this world. The movable jointed figures with inserted glass eyes wear precious, gold-embroidered garments; Mary and Joseph appear as persons of royal blood in Spanish court dress for the visit of the Three Kings.

The nativity scene was extensively restored and is now considered one of the most beautiful nativity scenes in Austria. It is displayed in the parish house in Frankenmarkt and can be viewed at Christmas after the church services; otherwise by telephone appointment with the parish office.
