About the museum

The mineral museum in Wald im Pinzgau is a private museum run by Kurt Nowak. Since 1991 he has made most of his finds accessible to the public, with aesthetic considerations in the foreground. He has found the pieces on display himself since 1974, sometimes together with partners, mainly in the area of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

The collection's special feature is whole mineral assemblages, so-called parageneses, from the Hohe Tauern, as well as outstanding finds from the neighboring Zillertal. Short descriptions and a photo documentation of each find site accompany the pieces. According to the operator, not a single euro of public funding went into the museum; it was financed solely through purchases by mineral enthusiasts. The specialist journal “Mineralogische Rundschau” devoted an article to the museum in 1994.

The museum includes a sales shop with what it describes as the most varied range of minerals from the region; international trade material is deliberately not stocked. Admission to the museum is free for all visitors.
