About the museum

The Bergbau- und Heimatmuseum Jochberg opened in 1977 on the second floor of the municipally owned Vereinsheim, the former primary school. It is run on a voluntary basis by the Bergbau- und Heimatmuseumsverein Jochberg, which received the Tyrolean Recognition Award for Museums for this in 2023.

The focus is on copper mining, which shaped the Jochberg region for centuries. Excavations show evidence of prehistoric mining as early as around 1000 BC, which a diorama illustrates vividly. Further rooms are devoted to one of Austria's largest fossil collections, bequeathed to the museum by Wilhelm Angerer, as well as minerals, alpine flowers and medicinal herbs, religious everyday objects, farming material culture and the Schützen and military tradition, including memorabilia of the 1809 folk hero Anton Oppacher.

In the Jägerstube (hunters' room) you can see native animal species, hunting and poaching weapons and trapping equipment, while in the Alpinstüberl the skiing equipment shows the rapid development of winter sports.

The museum association also runs the Bauernmuseum Vorderkünstler, opened in 2004, with a working grain mill from 1770, a weaving room, a cobbler's and saddler's workshop, large agricultural implements and Jochberg's first sports cable car; it can only be visited by arrangement.
