About the museum
The Felberturm was built in the first half of the 12th century as a residential and defensive tower of the noble lords of Velm. In 1415 it passed to the Archbishops of Salzburg, who converted it in 1470 into a granary ("Diensttroadkasten"). After being auctioned by the Bavarian government in 1812, it passed into private ownership and came to the municipality in 1936.
After renovation, a local history museum was set up in the tower in 1963. Between 2019 and 2021 the building was redesigned and fully renovated; since 7 July 2021 it has been open again with a new exhibition.
The ground floor is about the pack-animal trade across the Tauern, the packers' routes, equipment and the fates of the packers (Säumer). The first floor tells of Mittersill's path from market town to town, with topics such as jurisdiction, ironworking and leatherworking, gingerbread baking and the Mittersill witch trial, which is also presented on film. In the adjoining farmhouse, the daily life of farmers, who were often also packers, is shown; the museum shop and archive café are also located there. The former school building from 1609 serves as an education space and play workshop.
