About the museum

The museum's origins lie in the late 1950s. Under Prof. Hans Hönigschmid, a local heritage collection was set up in Bramberg, which from 1961 was housed as a "Heimatstube" (local history room) in the community hall. Two focal points emerged early on and still shape the house today: the minerals of the High Tauern and the cultural history of the region. In 1962 the Museumsverein (museum association) was founded.

In 1975 the municipality gave the association the Wilhelmgut, one of the oldest houses in the village. After several years of renovation and conversion work, the collection moved in; in 1979 the museum opened in the Wilhelmgut. Regular special exhibitions have been held since 1981. In 2002 the house received the ICOM museum quality seal for the first time, which was renewed in 2009. For the national park exhibition "Smaragde und Kristalle" the building was converted within one year and extended underground. In June 2025 the exhibition "Tauernschätze", on the history of mineral collecting, was added on the ground floor.

Today the museum is divided into the folklore department "Mensch und Kultur" in the Wilhelmgut, with dioramas of the animal and plant world of the Pinzgau and a bee world in the attic; the mineral displays in the basement; a mining department in the outdoor area; and an open-air area with eleven original buildings, including a bake oven, a mill and a sawmill.
