About the museum

The Vorderbad is one of originally three bathing establishments that the town of Braunau am Inn operated in the Middle Ages directly on the Stadtbach; the other two were the Mitterbad and the Hinterbad. The stream supplied the water for the baths. The Vorderbad is first mentioned in writing in 1592, but it had been in operation much longer, from the beginning of the 16th to the late 18th century. After that the bathing business ended, and the house on Färbergasse was used privately in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The building is considered a rarity, since only a few bathing establishments from this period have survived in such good condition in Europe. The bathhouses of the Mitterbad and Hinterbad, separated from the Vorderbad only by the "Am Berg" bridge, are privately owned and their historical significance could not be preserved.

Since November 2004 the historic bathhouse has been open to the public as a museum. Light tables, projections and audio stations introduce visitors to the Middle Ages and provide information on bathing, various healing practices, life in the town and archaeological finds. The house is looked after by the town of Braunau am Inn and, together with the Bezirksmuseum Herzogsburg and the Heimathaus, forms a combination ticket.
