About the museum
The fortified castle complex in Jedenspeigen goes back to the Middle Ages. After damage in the 15th century, it was fundamentally rebuilt around 1600.
The place is part of the site of the Battle on the Marchfeld of 1278, also known as the Battle of Dürnkrut and Jedenspeigen. Rudolf of Habsburg and the Bohemian King Ottokar II Přemysl met there; with Rudolf's victory, the Habsburg laid the foundation for his house's long-term dominance in Central Europe. The permanent exhibition “Schlacht & Schicksal 1278” (Battle & Fate 1278), in nine rooms with media stations, is devoted to this event.
After its restoration the castle has become a cultural venue. Besides the battle exhibition, it shows “Kellerlandschaften Mitteleuropas” (Cellar Landscapes of Central Europe), developed together with the Little Carpathians Museum in Pezinok, Slovakia, as well as a large collection of wine glasses. The castle also contains a wine shop with wines from the region and from Slovak partner winemakers, as well as the Knights' Hall, which is used for weddings and celebrations. Events such as the medieval festival “RittERLeben” also take place on the grounds.
