About the museum
The municipal museum in Malacky was founded in 1975 on the initiative of the academic painter Michal Tillner, who donated to the town a lifetime collection of folk and utilitarian art, historical monuments and several of his own paintings. It was originally housed in a water mill on Družstevná Street and was administered by the Malokarpatské múzeum Pezinok (Little Carpathians Museum in Pezinok).
In 1993 it passed to the Záhorské centrum kultúry (Záhorie Cultural Centre) and was given the name Múzeum Michala Tillnera (Michal Tillner Museum). After the building was restituted in 2000 the exhibition was closed and the collections were placed in storage. A new exhibition in the attic of the Mestské centrum kultúry on Záhorácka Street was solemnly opened on 18 February 2006.
The collection holds more than 1,200 objects, mainly ethnographic: ceramics, wooden and iron tools, furniture, lamps, clocks and, to a lesser extent, garments. The museum also includes outlying exhibitions in the crypts beneath the Franciscan church and in the Pálffy manor house (kaštieľ). For the 50th anniversary in 2025, part of the exhibition with kerosene lamps and wall clocks was modernised; it has been open to visitors again since January 2026.
