About the museum

The Bilger-Breustedt-Haus in Leoprechting, near Taufkirchen an der Pram, was the home and workplace of woodcut artist and stained-glass painter Margret Bilger (1904–1971) and her husband, the Bauhaus painter Hans Joachim Breustedt (1901–1984). The small house combines an Innviertel wooden cottage with tiny rooms and the character of a middle-class summer house; it stands in a garden whose meadow reaches down to the Pram.

After Bilger's death the house remained in the family. In 1998 the association Verein Bilger-Haus was founded with the aim of preserving the living and working rooms in their authentic condition. After a lease and extensive renovations between 2000 and 2003, the house opened as a regional museum on May 14, 2004. In 2007 the Margret-Bilger hiking trail through the Pram floodplains was added, and in 2023 the roof, veranda, windows and masonry were restored again.

Visitors see the rooms with original furniture and objects; personal guided tours tell them about the life and work of the artist couple. In addition, exhibitions with changing focuses are held each year, along with workshops, readings and events in the garden. Bilger's work ranges from expressive woodcuts through more than a hundred stained-glass windows for churches to late textile works and reverse glass paintings.
