About the museum
The Stadtmuseum Leonding is housed in Tower 9, one of the originally 32 towers of the Maximilian Tower Line, built in the 19th century as a defensive ring around Linz. The tower, which locals affectionately call "Apollonia", is regarded as a rare example of Biedermeier architecture.
Since 1999 the permanent exhibition "Vom Dorf zur Stadt" (From Village to Town) has told the history of the region across about 600 square meters in several strands: from prehistoric shark teeth and Stone Age grave finds, through Leonding's first mention in the early Middle Ages, to the town of more than 30,000 residents. A particular favorite with visitors is the "Leondine", a roughly 6,300-year-old Stone Age girl and one of the oldest known Austrian women. Another focus is the presentation of the Tower Line itself.
The town's local heritage collection comprises mainly everyday objects from the late 18th century onward, agricultural and craft tools, peasant furniture, objects on school history and historical lighting. The museum is run by the Leondinger Veranstaltungs- und Kulturservice GmbH (KUVA) for the city of Leonding; the museum quality seal was renewed for five years in 2024. From 2026 the museum no longer holds annually changing special exhibitions and concentrates on the permanent exhibition.
