About the museum
From the early 17th century until 1956 the house on the Erlauf served the leather trade. The older part of the building dates back to the 14th century; a wall painting with a leather vat and the year 1609 is considered the earliest evidence of the tannery. The façade bears rich sgraffito decoration.
In 1969 the market municipality acquired the building and set up a local history museum, which opened in 1970. Between 1994 and 1996 the house was restored and refurbished, with a focus on leather production.
Today the museum shows the steps from animal hide to leather and a shoemaker's workshop from Purgstall. It also documents local history with the iron and provisions trade as well as clothing and traditional costume. A highlight is the faithfully reconstructed grave structure from a Carolingian-era burial ground discovered in Purgstall in 1997. The former drying room on the first floor is used for special exhibitions and events, and the garden is part of the museum.
