About the museum
The Erlauftaler Feuerwehrmuseum is run by the Purgstall an der Erlauf volunteer fire brigade and has existed since 1992. It traces how firefighting in Lower Austria developed technically and organisationally.
On display is firefighting equipment from different eras, from hand-operated and horse-drawn wagon pumps to the modern emergency vehicles of today. The equipment is also demonstrated to visitors.
A special feature is a contemporary-history exhibition on the Purgstall prisoner-of-war camp of the First World War, where the painter Egon Schiele also did his military service. On the first Saturday of every month there are also rides in historic fire engines, and children can practise a “fire attack” with an old hand-cart pump.
