About the museum

The foundation is the collection of the Tiroler Gewerbemuseum, founded in 1888 by the Innsbruck Trade Association. At first exemplary contemporary craftwork was acquired, but soon also pre-industrial decorative arts, household goods and decorated farm tools from historical Tyrol. Nativity scenes, parlours, traditional costumes and religious folk art became focal points.

In 1926 the province of Tyrol took over the collection; in 1929 it was opened as the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum in the former Franciscan monastery next to the Hofkirche, including 14 completely installed parlours from the Gothic to the Rococo period. During the Nazi era the museum also served the renewal of traditional costume in line with the regime – a chapter that the museum has since examined in scholarly terms.

After its reopening in 1948 the collection was expanded over decades, later also with simple everyday objects, reverse glass paintings and prints. The permanent exhibition was fundamentally redesigned in 2009 and links historical ways of life with questions of the present.

Today the museum is part of the Tiroler Landesmuseen. The museum also gives access to the Hofkirche with the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I; special exhibitions and artistic interventions complement the programme.
