About the museum
The Goldenes Dachl is a late Gothic ornate oriel that Emperor Maximilian I had built between 1497 and 1500 on the south side of the "Neuhof", the then seat of the sovereign's government in Innsbruck's Old Town. The oriel is roofed with 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles; Nikolaus Türing the Elder is regarded as the master builder and creator of the reliefs, and the frescoes are attributed to the court painter Jörg Kölderer.
For a long time the building went rather unnoticed and served, among other things, as an administrative building and barracks. Only with the rise of tourism towards the end of the 19th century did the oriel become Innsbruck's best-known landmark.
The Museum of the City of Innsbruck in the house is dedicated to the builder and his era at the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern age. Historical exhibits and multimedia stations present Maximilian I as a patron of the arts, a skilful marriage strategist and the "last knight". A highlight is the view from the ornate oriel down into the Old Town.
