Temporarily closed (expected until 2028). Closed since 1 July 2024 due to conversion and renovation; reopening is planned for 2028. The library is temporarily housed in the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum.

About the museum

The Ferdinandeum goes back to a museum association founded in 1823 that wanted to create a “patriotic” museum for Tyrol; it owes its name to the then crown prince and later Emperor Ferdinand, who took on the patronage. The collections were initially stored in rented rooms until Archduke Johann opened the museum building designed by Anton Mutschlechner on today's Museumstraße in 1845.

In the 1880s the building was raised by a storey and given its entrance hall; in the 20th century the east and west wings were added. After bomb damage in 1945, the building was restored by 1949 and the relocated holdings returned. For the 175th anniversary, a deep storage facility and an extension followed in the late 1990s.

The collections range from archaeology through older and modern art, graphic art and music to the natural sciences, complemented by a large library. Since 2007 the Tiroler Landesmuseen-Betriebsgesellschaft has run the museum together with the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum, Hofkirche, Zeughaus and Tirol Panorama.

The Ferdinandeum has been closed since July 2024: the listed old building is being renovated, the rear extension has been demolished and is being replaced by a new building with more exhibition space and a larger event hall. During the renovation the museum shows exhibitions at other locations under the motto “Ferdinandeum unterwegs” (Ferdinandeum on the move).
