About the museum
The Stadtmuseum and the Stadtarchiv of the state capital Innsbruck form a joint department and share a historic building on Badgasse, directly behind Herzog-Friedrich-Straße. This close link between museum and archive is a distinctive feature of the Tyrolean museum landscape: anyone interested in a topic from the exhibition can explore it further in the archive on the second floor, with files, documents and photographs.
After an extensive renovation of the building, the exhibition rooms were enlarged and reorganized; the area covers around 160 square meters. Some rooms are intended for permanent displays, others for special exhibitions, for which movable display cases and rotating wall elements were installed. On show are paintings by Tyrolean artists, medieval documents, historic photographs, posters and postcards that offer insight into the lives of city residents over the centuries.
The topics include the location and founding of the city, its development, Innsbruck as a princely residence, public health, tourism, trade, sport and transport, and in particular the period around the Second World War. The house also offers guided tours for school classes and serves as a venue for lectures, readings and book presentations.
