About the museum
The house at the Steinerner Tisch dates from the 16th century: in 1555 miners from the Rerobichl mine were settled here on common land. After the decline of mining around 1700, craftspeople lived in it, at times a wheelwright and a master weaver, and finally a road mender (Wegmacher), after whom the house is named. It received its present form in 1898, when master carpenter Christian Widauer, son of the road mender Johann Widauer, rebuilt it.
In 1991 the municipality of Ellmau acquired the building and set up a local history museum in it; the museum association continues to collect regional material culture to this day. It is the only museum in the Söllandl, which comprises the municipalities of Söll, Scheffau, Going and Ellmau.
On the ground floor, the parlour, kitchen, cobbler's workshop and pantry show farm life; upstairs there is a bedroom with costume figures, a room on club life, a schoolroom and a barn with field and forest tools. In the attic, finds recall regional mining and equipment illustrates the development of alpinism.
The ensemble also includes a threshing floor from the Mitterbachhof in Scheffau, moved here in 2009, with a horse-powered gin and a scythe collection, a bee house and the relocated Ried House, which serves as a regional memory store.
