About the museum
Fort de Huy was built by the Dutch between 1818 and 1823 on the site of the former castle. A 16th-century well, a remnant of that castle, survives within the walls. During the occupation, the German army turned the fort into a detention camp: from May 1940 to 5 September 1944, more than 7,000 prisoners were held there.
Today the fort is a memorial to the Second World War. It remains an intact testimony to the Nazi concentration camp system, with its dungeons, interrogation room, detention cells and rudimentary wash-houses. The museum space explains the living conditions of the prisoners and the daily life of the population under the occupation.
The fort is run by the City of Huy. It regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, events and performances, offers two escape games and, from its ramparts, a 360° panorama over the town and its surroundings.
